The Opportunity

Lead Counselor & Clinical Supervisor

Lighthouse Community Charter School is looking for a Counselor who is relentlessly committed to ensuring that traditionally underserved students achieve our mission of completing college and securing the career of choice. Lighthouse staff believe that this important mission is not only attainable; it is essential to transforming our Oakland community. The Counselor will be an integral part of the multi-tiered systems of support team (MTSS) which ensures all students receive necessary academic, behavioral, and socio-emotional support to thrive in alignment with the Lighthouse Mission, Theory of Change, Graduate Profile, and Instructional Stances. This role will be split between direct services and supervision, which vary somewhat over the course of the year.

Roles and Responsibilities

CORE COUNSELOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide group and individual counseling, case management, and consultation services for a caseload of students, dependent on the needs of the school and students

  • Provide counseling services to identified students and to address a range of skill areas, including social skills, coping with grief/loss, ability to communicate needs or self-advocate, capacity to problem-solve, stress reduction, anger management, and focus and attentional redirection

  • Collaborate effectively across a range of stakeholders, including caregivers and teachers, to interpret the strengths and needs of a student and discuss possible interventions and supports

  • Participate on the coordination of services team, in individualized education plan meetings, and in student-led conferences for students on your caseload, as appropriate

  • Collect and analyze data to determine responsiveness to interventions and monitor progress on goals

  • Conduct safety assessments and assist in responding to mental health crises

  • Design and facilitate professional development for staff regarding social-emotional learning, trauma-based practices, and other related topics, as needed

  • Be a connector to caregivers, including building relationships, connecting to internal and external services and resources

  • Support in crisis response, which may include but is not limited to conducting risk assessments, completing mandated reporting, and consulting on complex situations

  • Continue to develop as a practitioner through seeking opportunities professional development and trainings independently and with the support of your supervisor

  • Additional duties as assigned by supervisor

MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES LEAD RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide guidance to counseling staff and liaise with external services providers of mental health services, as needed

  • Lead/co-lead clinical team meetings at assigned school site and across the family of schools

  • Support the intake and distribution of referrals for counseling services

  • Provide input and feedback and support the execution of policies, including crisis response, transgender/gender diverse supports and policies, etc.

  • Lead professional development for the counseling team and the organization-wide staff on relevant topics, including trauma-based practices, social-emotional learning, etc.

  • Provide consultation and support with urgent clinical issues to any counseling trainees or other counselors on the team

  • Support the collection and analysis of social-emotional learning universal screener data to build multi-tiered supports and services

  • Participate on student support teams, including attendance and multi-tiered systems of support

  • Participate in identified leadership trainings with the family of schools

CLINICAL SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the counseling trainee program in partnership with the Counseling Trainee Program Coordinator:

    • Provide individual and/or group supervision to first and second year counseling interns or trainees

    • Provide professional development to the counseling trainees

    • Offer support and guidance to the counseling trainees

    • Provide consultation and support with urgent clinical issues to any counseling trainees

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • For Counselor Role:

    • Appropriate Master’s Degree, required

    • California Pupil Personnel Services Credential OR Licensed with the Board of Behavioral Sciences as a Licensed Family or Marriage Therapist, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, or Other Mental Health Licensure, Required

    • Experience working with youth in K-12, urban settings similar to our student population

    • Experience working with at-risk youth and families in clinical and/or school settings

    • Expertise in crisis intervention

    • Bilingual in Spanish, preferred

  • For Mental Health Services Lead Role:

    • 3+ years of experience as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, or Licensed Marriage Family Therapist

    • Experience facilitating adult learning or leading professional learning teams

  • For Clinical Supervisor Role:

  • Experience providing clinical supervision to graduate students in a practicum field placement

  • Licensed with the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker or Licensed Marriage Family Therapist, required

  • California Pupil Personnel Services Credential, preferred

SUPERVISION

This position reports to the Senior Director of Student Services.

TIME COMMITMENT

This position is 1.0 FTE (full-time exempt) and follows a 11-month (210 day) work year with significant student-free days for professional learning and collaboration with colleagues and interaction with families. Exact summer schedule to be determined in collaboration with supervisor and with supervisor approval on use and timing of any summer work in the 11th month outside the 10-month calendar.

Common Building Hours: All instructional staff are expected to maintain hours of 8:00 - 4:00 pm M, Tu, Th, Fri and 8:00-5:00 on Wednesdays for Professional Development.
