Review - Soundcore Aerofit: This is amazing | Nasi Lemak Tech (1)

Let me introduce you to this pair of unconventional earbuds. I don’t even know if this should be called earbuds – but it’s the Soundcore AeroFit. If you don’t already know, Soundcore is one of the many sub-brands under Anker, and Soundcore focuses on audio products only – as the name suggests.

Now, what makes this pair of earphones special is that they’re kind of like boomboxes but hanging close to our ears. They don’t go into our ears – and that makes a lot of difference.

The Soundcore Aerofit is one of the 3 pairs of “open-ear” earbuds that are available to purchase right now.

So, let’s get started with the unboxing. It’s pretty simple, really. Opening it up reveals the earbuds themselves, and it also has some documentation alongside a USB-C cable for charging. That’s it – and that’s all we need, actually.

The earbuds case is fairly wide and flat. It has three LEDs at the front that functions as a battery indicator and there is a button to make the earbuds enter pairing mode. Fairly typical here.

Once we open up the case, that’s where the magic happens. The earphones themselves are in this hook shape. It’s really easy to wear them – just slot it in this position and you’re good to go. I don’t have to worry about whether or not I’m wearing it correctly since the speaker is always going to point in the direction of my ear canal.

There is also a touch panel that’s located here. We can customize what to do with them via the app – which we’ll quickly talk about it right now.

It’s a fairly simple app as there are only three menus that we’re going to talk about. The first one is the Sound Effects and I just leave it in fault as I think that’s the best. You can fine-tune it using the Custom EQ to make it suit your ears if you want to.

As for the controls, this is where we can customize what the touch panels do. They work as expected – so nothing much to talk about here.

In the settings menu, we can update the firmware and enable the Dual Connections option – which I actually turned it on for the entirety of this review period. I brought the Soundcore Aerofit with me to Taiwan and I paired it with my phone and my MacBook Pro – and it seamlessly switches between the two devices. I love this feature.

Surprisingly, there is an unnoticeable amount of audio delay as well. I played games on my phone and also edited videos on the laptop with Dual Connections enabled, and I realized that the audio delay is just minimal. That’s fantastic and suits how I want to use my earphones.

Even with the conventional type of “closed-ear” earbuds, I would sometimes turn on ambient mode to listen to the environment. But because the environment sound went through a layer of processing before it’s played back into my ears, it sounds weird. This type of “open-ear” earbuds are forever an ambient mode – but that also means I can never enable ANC or even ENC for that matter.

That also means if the environment is noisy, this Soundcore Aerofit will be pretty much… ineffective as we can’t hear any music that we’re playing. We’ll have to bump up the volume by a lot to actually hear the music. But once the plane engine quiets down… the volume would be too high. That’s actually what I experienced when I tried to listen to music while the plane is about to take off.

Surprisingly, because of how the speaker is positioned – no one else can hear what I’m hearing. I also wear the Aerofit when I’m walking on the streets, it feels like I have background music accompanying me everywhere I go.

However, I have to talk about the sound quality with you guys. Honestly speaking, it’s a bit heavier on the bass side on the Soundcore Signature EQ. Again, remember that you can tune the EQ yourself in the app. And to me, it actually sounds good. The bass is punchy even though there is very little sense of thump, the mids and highs are also clear as my big band jazz sounds amazing. What surprised me is that vocals are also fantastic. I thoroughly enjoyed my time using the Aerofit.

Should you buy the Soundcore Aerofit?

I have to warn you though – the Soundcore Aerofit is not for everyone. It’s a very niche style of earbuds. If you want a pair of “open-ear” earbuds, then you can consider getting this.

For me, they’re amazing. I don’t like to have something stabbed in my ear for an extended period of time and that’s why this kind of “open-ear” concept is great for me.

The price though, might shock many of you. It’s RM499. Yes, it’s a premium price, so make sure to test it out before making your purchase. If you like it, then I think it’s actually the best in its category at this price range.
